W. DEWULF, A Pro-Active Approach
to Ecodesign : Framework and Tools, 2003
Abstract
This dissertation proposes a pro-active approach to ecodesign. A
survey of the state of the art revealed two major shortcomings of
current ecodesign support methods. On the one hand, the available
ecodesign support tools are primarily useful in late stages of a
design process. On the other hand, a thorough integration of
ecodesign in the wider business processes of companies is lacking.
Therefore, this dissertation presents two new ecodesign support
tools, as well as an encompassing framework.
The proposed ecodesign tools are particularly aimed at supporting
the early phases of a design process. On the one hand, the
Ecodesign Knowledge System supports the generation of
environmentally benign design alternatives by providing a context
sensitive supply of ecodesign guidelines and experience. On the
other hand, the Eco-PaS system supports the estimation of potential
environmental impact based on functional parameters available in
the concept development phase.
The ecodesign framework is based on the concept of product-oriented
environmental performance indicators, and distinguishes three
levels. The project level covers support for individual design
projects. The company level guarantees a long-term vision by
providing a product oriented environmental management system.
Finally, the sector level supports the necessary standardisation
activities in order to allow for effective and efficient data
collection and communication.
